Review Criteria

The most important thing about our reviews is that we aim to be impartial. We will take a beer at 'taste' value, regardless of any preconceptions we have about a brewery or certain type of beer. Throughout the year we will also try to review an equal number of ales from each category and to try as many draught beers as bottled varieties. Each review will follow this structure:

Beer Category/Type
One of the following CAMRA-defined categories of Real Ale:

  • Mild
  • Bitter
  • Golden Ale
  • Pale Ale/IPA
  • Stout/Porter
  • Old Ale
We will aim to get this right, but feel free to correct us if you think it belongs in another category!

Colour
Whilst every review will be accompanied by a photo of the beer in a glass, this should help readers quickly identify the shade of the beer.

The Review...
The review itself will be in order of how the tastes hit the palate, so from the initial first impressions, to how the taste develops, right to the aftertaste - and all the steps in-between. We may talk about the pub, the price, the brewery, or whatever we think of on the day (please let us know if we are boring you half to death though!)
